I have spent the last 4 weeks making a variety of home dec type objects for a variety of reasons. Placemats, table runners, pillows. And the thing is, I just can’t get in to it. It’s relatively easy sewing as those things go. Mostly straight lines, lovely fabrics, but I just can’t get excited about the finished objects. How many throw pillows does a person need exactly? How about you? Love it or hate it? Do you redecorate for every season?
Meanwhile, I did find some fun, helpful and inspiring tutorials while I was working out all of the details on these projects:
- A nice tutorial on mitered corners for napkins
- A very simple envelope style pillow cover
- Really cute halloween trivet/mat made with english paper piecing
- An oldie-but-a-goodie criss cross coasters. The construction on these is simple and clever.
I agree about meh now. We still have the curtains I made when we were starry-eyed new homeowners. Now there is so much of me in every object in the room and the drops of paint on the walls. When we were a new couple, home dec was a great way to make a place *ours*. We had cast-off furniture and stuff from Target and Ikea. Pretty generic. Fabric was cheap and easy.
We also didn’t have a carpet like you have. A piece like that doesn’t need throw pillows around it to make a place special.
My father decided the color scheme for our house when I was an infant. He purchased a red leather chair with the money he got from writing a textbook. He bought a gold velvet hide-a-bed sofa which he dragged across the country twice. He picked red to go with the Dalmations he intended to have. Gold went with red. He kept the furniture through five houses and three marriages. While I hope I am not such a hoe furnishing tyrant, and I like to think I have branched out, I haven’t. Am I lazy, or have I just found what pleases me well enough. Probably a bit of both.
That beautiful rug was our big splurge when we moved in. We wanted something nice and we had made a little money when we sold our condo. It was expensive and still looks pretty much as nice as when we got it 15 years ago. I love it and I expect we will have it for a long time.
The orientals that Gma and Gpa have at 33 Morrison have been there since the mid-50s, still beautiful. Could care less about home dec. here, just try to keep up with the clutter and guitars. Christmas tree, never mind the other stuff.
