Order of Protection
Coptic bound book with hand embroidery and mixed media collage. Shattered glass screen protector, packing paper, marbled paper, security envelope, recycled vintage text book and dictionary cover and pages.
4.5 x 5 inches. 2026.
Every recycled and found material in Order of Protection was chosen for its connection to protection: packing paper protects what is being shipped, a book cover protects the pages within, security envelopes conceal and protect what they contain, and a glass screen protector shields a fragile surface from damage. The pages come from a discarded textbook on materials mechanics, specifically chapters on stress, fatigue, and tension. The screen protector, found shattered on the sidewalk, became the book’s windows. Cracked but still held together, it suggests armor that has absorbed repeated blows and remains intact. Images of protection are visible through the damaged glass, creating a quiet connection to violence that leaves no visible marks, where stress and tension can accumulate beneath a surface that still appears intact.
